CTO: Configure-to-Order
CTO means a server is built to the buyer's chosen specification of CPU, memory, storage, and cards rather than sold as a fixed prebuilt model. It lets you match hardware exactly to a workload, versus off-the-shelf SKUs with predetermined components.
In a CTO order, you select each component from a compatibility matrix (processors, DIMM count and size, drives, RAID controller, network cards, power supplies) and the vendor assembles and tests the unit as one part number. This avoids paying for parts you do not need and prevents mismatches that hurt performance, such as unbalanced memory population.
The tradeoff is lead time. CTO builds take longer than pulling a stocked, prebuilt configuration off the shelf, and minimum quantities or component availability can affect delivery. Prebuilt SKUs ship faster but lock you into whatever the vendor pre-decided.
When ordering CTO servers from China, put the full bill of materials in writing: exact CPU SKU, DIMM count and rank, drive models, controller, NICs, and management license tier. Confirm the configuration is validated against the platform's compatibility list so you receive a balanced, working build rather than a box of loosely compatible parts.
