LRDIMM: Load-Reduced DIMM

An LRDIMM is a server memory module that buffers both data and address/command signals through an on-module memory buffer. This cuts electrical load further than an RDIMM, enabling the highest per-DIMM capacities and full memory population, at slightly higher latency.

Where an RDIMM buffers only address and command lines, an LRDIMM adds a buffer on the data bus as well. Reducing the load the controller sees lets the platform support the largest modules (128 GB and up) and keep speed high even when every slot is filled. The tradeoff is a small latency penalty from the extra data buffering.

LRDIMMs target capacity-hungry workloads: large in-memory databases, virtualization hosts, and analytics. They cost more per gigabyte than RDIMMs and are worth it mainly when you need maximum total memory in a socket. They cannot be mixed with RDIMMs in the same system.

When sourcing high-memory servers from China, use LRDIMMs only if the capacity target genuinely requires them, since RDIMMs are cheaper and slightly faster at moderate capacities. Confirm the CPU and motherboard support the specific LRDIMM capacity, because maximum supported module size varies by platform generation.
