NVMe: Non-Volatile Memory Express

NVMe is a storage protocol that lets SSDs talk directly to the CPU over PCIe lanes instead of the older SATA or SAS controller path. It cuts latency and pushes millions of IOPS, far beyond what SATA SSDs deliver.

NVMe was designed for flash from the start, unlike SATA and SAS, which inherited command sets built for spinning disks. It uses deep, parallel command queues (up to 65,535 queues, each 65,535 commands deep) so a controller can keep an SSD busy without the single-queue bottleneck of AHCI. A PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe drive moves roughly 7 GB/s sequential; a SATA III SSD caps at about 550 MB/s.

In servers you see NVMe in U.2, U.3, E1.S, E3.S, and M.2 form factors. Enterprise U.2 and U.3 drives support hot-swap through a backplane, carry power-loss protection capacitors, and are rated for far higher endurance than consumer M.2 sticks. Latency typically sits in the tens of microseconds versus hundreds for SATA.

When sourcing from China, confirm the backplane and CPU actually provide enough PCIe lanes for the NVMe bays you want. A chassis sold as NVMe-capable may only wire a subset of bays, or route them through a PCIe switch that shares bandwidth. Ask for the drive population diagram before buying.
