Rack unit (U) and 1U/2U/4U form factors

A rack unit (U) is 1.75 inches (44.45 mm) of vertical space in a standard 19-inch rack. A 1U server is one unit tall, a 2U is two, a 4U is four. Taller chassis fit more drives, larger coolers, and full-height GPUs at the cost of rack density.

Racks are measured in U, and a full cabinet is typically 42U. The number in front of U is the height of the chassis. 1U is dense and common for compute and networking, but its shallow lid limits cooling, drive count, and expansion cards to low-profile parts. 2U is the workhorse size, balancing drive bays, airflow, and full-height PCIe slots.

4U and taller chassis exist because some hardware does not fit in thin boxes. Multi-GPU servers, large storage arrays, and high-TDP builds need the height for airflow, tall heatsinks, full-length double-width cards, and many drive bays. The tradeoff is that a 4U server consumes four times the rack space of a 1U.

For buyers, form factor is a constraint set by your rack depth, power, and cooling, not just a preference. GPU servers usually demand 2U or larger. Confirm the chassis depth fits your cabinet, that rails are included, and that your rack PDU and cooling can handle the density before ordering from China.
