Redfish: DMTF management API
Redfish is a modern RESTful API standard from the DMTF for managing servers and datacenter hardware. It uses HTTPS and JSON to expose inventory, sensors, power control, and firmware updates, and is the intended replacement for the older IPMI protocol.
Redfish models hardware as a tree of JSON resources reachable over standard HTTP methods. Instead of the binary messages of IPMI, you send GET, POST, and PATCH requests to URLs like /redfish/v1/Systems, which makes it easy to automate with any HTTP client or tool such as Ansible. Every major BMC now implements it: iDRAC, iLO, Lenovo XCC, and Huawei iBMC.
The standard is maintained by the DMTF and versioned continuously, with schema extensions for storage, networking, and telemetry. Because it uses TLS and token or session authentication, it is more secure than IPMI-over-LAN and better suited to large-scale, scripted fleet management.
When you buy servers from China for a fleet, Redfish gives you one consistent automation surface across brands, which cuts the cost of managing mixed hardware. Check that the BMC firmware is recent enough to support the Redfish features you need, since older firmware may implement only a partial schema.
