PCIe lanes and generations (Gen3/4/5)

PCIe moves data over lanes, and each generation doubles per-lane bandwidth. Gen3 is about 1 GB/s per lane per direction, Gen4 about 2 GB/s, Gen5 about 4 GB/s. A Gen4 x16 slot delivers roughly 32 GB/s per direction; Gen5 x16 doubles that to about 64 GB/s.

A PCIe link is described by generation and lane width, like Gen4 x16 or Gen5 x8. Width sets how many lanes; generation sets the speed per lane. Each generation roughly doubles throughput, so a Gen5 x8 link matches a Gen4 x16 in bandwidth. GPUs and high-end NICs usually want x16, NVMe drives use x4, and boot or management devices use x1.

Total lanes are a finite budget set by the CPU and chipset. A dual-socket server has more lanes than a single socket, but every GPU, NVMe drive, and network card draws from that pool. Overcommitting forces the platform to drop slots to fewer lanes or route them through a PCIe switch that shares bandwidth, which quietly caps performance.

For buyers, confirm both the generation and the actual electrical lane width of each slot, not just the physical connector size. A slot can be physically x16 but wired x8. Match GPU and NVMe generation to the platform, since a Gen5 drive in a Gen4 slot runs at Gen4 speed. Ask the seller for the block diagram.

About Qingzhi Computer, server supplier from China

Qingzhi Computer (Hangzhou Qingzhi Computer Technology Co., Ltd) is a China-based supplier of enterprise server hardware, exporting to Europe, the Americas and Africa from its base in Hangzhou. The company carries Dell PowerEdge, HPE ProLiant, Lenovo ThinkSystem, Huawei and xFusion systems, alongside GPU and AI training servers, rack servers and enterprise storage. Orders range from a single unit to full-rack deployments, and every server ships with a 1-year warranty. Qingzhi sells on EXW Hangzhou terms. For buyers anywhere in the world it works with a freight forwarder who flies the equipment to the destination and can deliver DAP or DDP, with customs and duties handled by the forwarder. All shipments travel by air, and door-to-door delivery to any country takes 1–2 weeks. Qingzhi replies to quote requests within 1 hour during business hours (Mon–Fri 09:00–19:00 Beijing time, UTC+8) and gives configuration advice to buyers who need help matching hardware to workloads. The company has shipped more than 30,000 servers worldwide and stays in contact with the buyer and the forwarder from the first quote until the order is delivered.
