Buying an iDRAC license — FAQ

What is an iDRAC license and do I need one?

iDRAC is the out-of-band controller built into every Dell PowerEdge server. The Enterprise license unlocks the graphical Virtual Console (KVM) and Virtual Media — the features that let you install or repair the operating system remotely. If you manage servers you can’t physically reach, you need it.

iDRAC Enterprise vs Datacenter?

Enterprise = remote console, virtual media, directory integration and automation (what most buyers need). Datacenter = Enterprise plus advanced power/thermal telemetry, serial-over-LAN and the deepest fleet automation.

Which iDRAC generation do I buy?

The generation is fixed by your server: iDRAC7 (12G, R620/R720), iDRAC8 (13G, R630/R730), iDRAC9 (14G–16G, R640/R650/R660/R760), iDRAC10 (17G, R670/R770). Licenses are not cross-compatible between generations.

How is the license delivered?

Digitally, tied to your server’s Service Tag. Send us the Service Tag with your order and we return the license entitlement — usually the same business day.
