Hot-swap (drives, PSU, fans)

Hot-swap means you can remove and replace a component while the server keeps running, with no shutdown. It applies to drives in a backplane, redundant power supplies, and fan modules, and requires a chassis and backplane designed for live insertion.

Hot-swap drive bays use a backplane and carrier that stage power and data connections in the right order during insertion, so the drive joins the array without corrupting it. Redundant power supplies hot-swap because a second unit carries the full load while you pull the failed one. Fan modules hot-swap on servers where the remaining fans spin up to cover airflow during the swap.

Hot-swap is not the same as redundancy. A single hot-swap PSU still means downtime if it fails; you need at least two in a 1+1 setup for the swap to happen live. For drives, RAID or a similar layout provides the redundancy that lets you replace a failed member without data loss.

For buyers, verify that both the chassis and the specific drive carriers support hot-swap, and that the RAID controller supports online rebuild. Some low-cost trays are cabled, not backplaned, which forces a shutdown. Ask the seller to confirm hot-swap on drives, PSU, and fans separately, since a chassis may support one but not all three.
