Dell PowerEdge vs HPE ProLiant vs Lenovo ThinkSystem: how to choose
Dell, HPE and Lenovo all build reliable servers, and for most workloads any of the three will do the job well. The choice turns on management tooling, your existing estate and use case. Here is how to decide it.
At a glance
All three vendors ship reliable, well-supported 2U workhorses on the same Intel Xeon and AMD EPYC platforms, so raw performance will not separate them. What differs, and what you will live with daily, is the out-of-band management controller, the RAID stack and the security architecture. Start here, then read the sections below for the nuance.
| Brand | Flagship 2U | Remote management | RAID | Security |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dell PowerEdge | R760 / R7625 (R770 on 17G) | iDRAC9 / 10 | PERC | Cyber Resilient Architecture, silicon root of trust |
| HPE ProLiant | DL380 Gen11 (Gen12 shipping) | iLO6 / 7 | Smart Array | Silicon Root of Trust |
| Lenovo ThinkSystem | SR650 V3 | XClarity Controller (XCC) | ThinkSystem RAID | Platform Root of Trust |
Dell PowerEdge
Dell is the volume default in a lot of data centers, and iDRAC9 is a big reason why: its remote management is mature, scriptable and widely understood, so most sysadmins are already fluent in it. The current R660 (1U), R760 (2U Intel) and R7625 (AMD EPYC) line covers mainstream compute, and Dell has broad, well-documented GPU support if you are heading toward accelerated workloads. If you want the safe, universally-supported choice with the largest installed base and the deepest pool of people who know the tooling, this is it.
HPE ProLiant
HPE ProLiant DL360 (1U) and DL380 (2U) Gen11 are the perennial rivals to Dell's R-series, and the DL380 in particular is one of the most deployed servers in the world. iLO6 is a polished management experience, and HPE leans hard on its Silicon Root of Trust, firmware is anchored in hardware so the boot chain is verified from silicon up, which resonates in security-conscious and compliance-driven environments. If firmware integrity and a strong management story are near the top of your list, ProLiant is a natural pick.
Lenovo ThinkSystem
Lenovo ThinkSystem SR630 (1U) and SR650 V3 (2U) inherited and refined the old IBM System x engineering, and the line has a strong reputation for thermal design and energy efficiency. Lenovo regularly posts competitive performance-per-watt and benchmark results. Management is via XClarity Controller (XCC) with the XClarity suite for fleet-level administration. If power, cooling and running costs weigh heavily, dense deployments, warm rooms, big fleets. ThinkSystem deserves a serious look.
Which to choose, by use case
Match the machine to the job before the badge. A few practical steerings:
- Virtualization / general compute, any of the three; pick the management tooling your team already knows (iDRAC, iLO or XClarity).
- GPU / AI, favour models with the PCIe lanes, power and thermal headroom for accelerators; Dell R760 and HPE DL380 Gen11 are common, well-proven GPU hosts.
- Storage-dense, look at the large-bay chassis in each line for maximum drive count per U.
- Edge / space-constrained, short-depth and ruggedized variants exist across all three; match to your rack depth and environment.
Buying refurbished or CTO from China
We supply all three brands. Dell PowerEdge, HPE ProLiant and Lenovo ThinkSystem, as new factory CTO or as tested refurbished units, so you can standardise on the management stack you prefer rather than on whatever a single distributor happens to hold. Every machine is assembled and burned in before it ships by air on EXW Hangzhou terms. If you are importing for the first time, we help arrange a forwarder who delivers to your door in 1–2 weeks. All three carry the same 1-year warranty with cross-border advance-replacement RMA.

Frequently asked questions
Which brand is most reliable?
Honestly, all three are excellent and reliability differences are marginal at the platform level, they use the same Intel and AMD silicon. Reliability in practice comes more from correct configuration, good burn-in and firmware hygiene than from the badge. We test every unit the same way regardless of brand.
Which is best for GPU servers?
Dell PowerEdge R760 and HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen11 are both widely used, well-proven GPU hosts with the PCIe lanes and thermal headroom for two to four accelerators. Lenovo has strong GPU-capable models too. Tell us the GPUs and count and we'll match the right chassis.
Can you mix brands in one order?
Yes. A single order can combine Dell, HPE and Lenovo, useful when different teams have standardised on different management tooling, or when you are consolidating a mixed estate. It ships together on one set of documents.
Do you supply all three brands from China?
Yes. Dell PowerEdge, HPE ProLiant and Lenovo ThinkSystem, as new factory CTO or tested refurbished, on EXW Hangzhou terms with a 1-year cross-border warranty.
